Singer-Songwriter Amy LaVere -- "The World Is Not My Home" (Archer) *** from Detroit Free Press: January 15, 2006 by Greg Crawford Her debut on Memphis-based Archer Records is an intriguing mix of alterna-pop (icy-cool disc opener "Day Like Any"), old-school country (the weepy "Leaving") and folk-roots fare (the Cajun-flavored "Take 'Em or Leave 'Em") that gains appeal with repeated listens. LaVere's offbeat voice, husky and child-like, takes some getting used to, but she uses it to fine effect on the album's best moment: the pedal steel-drenched "Nightingale," an eerie lover's lament that manages to sound at once medieval and modern. In stores Tuesday. By Greg Crawford, Free Press staff writer |
