THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME Amy LaVere from Nightflying: January 15, 2006 by Andy Meeks there are a few more by others, including Paul Taylor, who provides percussion (and even mellotron) on some cuts. Jim Dickinson sits in on piano here and there. All in all, it’s a fine example of the fact that New York City ain’t got nothin’ on Memphis for music. Mostly recorded at Archer Records, this is as fine a piece of work as I have heard this year or for the past several years for that matter. It has a courtliness which reminds me that the roots of our familiar music stretch all the way back to Europe and lords and ladies waltzing in glittering ballrooms. I can imagine Amy as a lovely waif standing outside a window of one of those ballrooms, singing along to the music, making up her lyrics as she goes along. Archer is at 88 Union Avenue (zip 38103) or you may call 901-521-0700. You really ought to check this out. |
